Scholarships at Buffalo State University

For Incoming Students

  • The Sweet Scholarship

    The Robert A. and Dorothy Stender Sweet Physics Scholarship awards $4,000/year for four years. Students are considered upon admission to the college. There are no additional applications required. Students who qualify will be contacted regarding their award under separate cover, generally in May. 

    To be eligible, students be enrolled as full-time undergraduates with a declared major in any undergraduate program in the Physics Department. Students must also have at least a 90 high school average and standardized test scores of 1170 on the SAT (EBRW and Math) or 24 on the ACT test. There is preference for students who successfully completed a calculus course in high school and have been accepted to the All College Honors Program at Buffalo State.

    While the Sweet Scholarships are primarily intended for incoming freshmen, the Scholarships can also be awarded to current physics students at Buffalo State with an overall grade point average of 3.5/4.0 or higher.

  • Honors Scholarship

    Students who qualify for the Sweet Scholarship typically also qualify for Muriel Howard Honors Program, which awards students with scholarships equivalent to $2,500/year.

  • Presidential Scholarship

    This is a merit based scholarship awarded to new, incoming first-year students at Buffalo State. No separate application is required and the student will be notified of their awards shortly after their admission. Students are awarded $2500/year and it is renewable for upto 4 years.   • New York State STEM Incentive Program

    The NYS STEM Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top 10 percent of students in each NYS high school if they pursue a STEM degree in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program and agree to live in NYS and work in a STEM field in NYS for five years after graduation. For Current Students

  • Dewayne Berry Physics Scholarship Award

    This award provides money toward tuition for a physics major (amount may be split to provide more awards as warranted) who has completed at least 18 credit hours in physics.

    The award(s) will be based on academic achievement and/or financial need, as circumstances dictate. The faculty of the Physics Department will make the selection annually before the end of the spring semester, and the award will be credited to the recipient’s student account toward tuition for the following semester.

  • The James W. Wells Award In Physics

    To give an annual award to an undergraduate student determined to be hardworking in the field of physics.

    Applicant must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program, both at the time of the selection and during the period covered by the scholarship. Applicant must have completed at least 18 credits in physics and have a 3.0 GPA or higher prior to receipt of the award. Through curricular and extra-curricular accomplishments as established through superior effort and dedication to the learning, research, and/or teaching of physics, as recommended by the chair of the Physics Department.

  • Misri Lal & Laxmi Devi Rustgi Memorial Award Fund In Physics

    One award should be given each year to the Physics major with the highest cumulative GPA.

    Candidate must have completed at least five semesters in the physics program at Buffalo State. Candidate must have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. It is given to a student who has performed research by themselves or with a faculty mentor. Candidate must be a physics major at Buffalo State. The successful candidate is entitled to the award one time only. Transfer students are not eligible.

  • Vernon Bullough Memorial Physics Award

    Given to the physics major with the highest GPA. The recipient must have junior or senior status.

  • Physics Service Award

    Given by the department, for outstanding contributions to the Buffalo State physics community.

  • EURO Scholarship

    Students in their freshman and sophomore year who participate in research are eligible to apply for the Early Undergraduate Research Opportunity (EURO) program. Students will receive a stipend of $1000 or $500 for their work.

For Teacher Preparation

  • US Department of Education TEACH grants

    Up to four years of undergrad or two years of masters degree study leading to physics teaching at up to $4,000/year. Financial need is not necessary (but FAFSA completion is), and this grant is actually a FORGIVABLE LOAN with a service obligation: The recipient is expected to spend four years teaching in a high needs school within eight years of completing the degree program. Part time students are eligible (pro-rated) and a GPA of 3.25 is required.  More information at the Department of Education website and the Buffalo State Financial Aid Office.

  • NYSED HS Math and Science Teacher Scholarships

    Up to four years of undergrad or two years of masters degree study leading to physics teaching at up to $4,000/year. Financial need is not necessary (but FAFSA completion is), and this grant is actually a FORGIVABLE LOAN with a service obligation: The recipient is expected to spend four years teaching in a high needs school within eight years of completing the degree program.   • US Federal Student Loan Forgiveness for certain K-12 school teachers

    Covers about $4,500/year of tuition paid directly to NYS institution for up to four years of undergraduate or one year of graduate study leading to initial teacher certification. Intended for traditional and nontraditional candidates. Forgiven if the recipient works for five years in New York State as a high school math or science teacher

  • Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KTSF) Fellowships

    An extremely competitive program providing up to $10,000 annually of tuition assistance and stipend for students who already have a bachelors in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or math) and are within five years of their bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
